Ben White is back in the England fold — and nobody really knows why he ever left

Three years after walking out of the Qatar World Cup without explanation, Ben White has been called back into the England squad by Thomas Tuchel. No press conference confession, no public statement clearing the air — just a call-up, and the mystery quietly shelved.

White comes in as cover for injured Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah ahead of friendlies against Uruguay and Japan. If he gets on the pitch, it'll be his first England appearance since a March 2022 friendly against Ivory Coast — his fourth cap. Four caps in three years, then nothing. Now this.

What Southgate couldn't fix, Tuchel has managed

Gareth Southgate wanted White back for Euro 2024 and said so openly. "He would be in this squad, but he's not available to us," Southgate admitted at the time, with obvious frustration. White never budged. Whatever happened in Qatar — the FA cited "personal reasons" and asked for privacy, Southgate later denied a fallout with assistant Steve Holland — was apparently enough for White to switch off from international football entirely.

Tuchel, who took over from Southgate last year, said he'd reach out to White directly. Clearly that conversation went better.

The timing matters. The 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico is approaching fast, and England's defensive options at right back aren't exactly brimming with depth. White has spent the last few seasons as one of the Premier League's most reliable defenders at Arsenal. Ignoring him was always a strange call, whoever's fault it was.

What this means for England's World Cup picture

A fit, form White pushing for a World Cup squad place shifts England's defensive calculations. His composure on the ball suits Tuchel's style, and at 28 he's in the prime years of his career. England's right-back situation has been patchy for long enough that White's availability could move betting markets around their defensive setup for the tournament.

There's one detail that's always stuck out about White. When asked about his relationship with football in 2021, he told Sky Sports: "I just loved the game, I was always playing it, never watching it." For a player who then voluntarily walked away from a World Cup and went quiet for three years, that line reads differently now than it did then.
