Bernardo Silva Is Taking John Stones to Madrid — Just Not That One

"Every time I call my dog or shout at my dog, I'll think of you — like I own you." That's Bernardo Silva's explanation to John Stones for naming his French bulldog after the England defender. Stones' reaction? "Alright, why?" Bernardo's logic is airtight.

Silva has officially completed his move to Real Madrid after leaving Manchester City, and the dog is making the trip to the Spanish capital with him. The actual John Stones — City's centre-back — is also expected to leave the Etihad this summer, though not to Madrid and definitely not on a lead.

A friendship built over eight years at City

Silva joined City in 2017, and he and Stones became genuinely close — the kind of close where you immortalise someone in your pet's name. Speaking to City's media team in 2021, Silva was clear that the name wasn't just a wind-up.

"We're very close and I always said to him that one day if I had a dog, I would call him John. It's actually a great name. He's a beautiful boy and is very intelligent."

Stones, for his part, seems to have taken it in good humour — or at least accepted his fate. "You can imagine what goes on in the changing room," he said, after describing the dog's regular appearances at training. A French bulldog wandering through a Premier League dressing room named after one of your teammates. Yeah, that tracks.

What this means on the pitch

The dog is a fun footnote, but the transfer itself carries real weight. Silva is one of the most technically complete midfielders of his generation, and Real Madrid have landed him at 30 — old enough to know exactly what he is, young enough to have several high-level seasons left. Carlo Ancelotti now has a player who can control tempo, press intelligently, and operate in tight spaces at the highest level.

For Madrid's La Liga odds next season, adding Silva to a squad already built around Bellingham, Vinicius, and Mbappé makes them considerably harder to beat over a 38-game campaign. The depth problem that occasionally cost them last season just got a meaningful fix.

As for John the dog — he'll be roaming Madrid streets soon enough. Named after a man who never made it to the Bernabéu, attending a club his namesake never played for. Football is strange and wonderful like that.
