Inter Miami have signed Casemiro. MLS is already investigating them for how they did it. For a club with Jorge Mas at the wheel, this is becoming a pattern that's hard to ignore.
The league confirmed Wednesday it is reviewing a tampering allegation against Miami, centred on whether the club contacted Casemiro before acquiring the LA Galaxy's discovery rights — the league mechanism designed to stop exactly that kind of backroom dealing. The Galaxy held priority to negotiate with the Brazilian midfielder. Miami went ahead and got their man anyway, and the two clubs have since reached a settlement, though the compensation figure won't be confirmed until the investigation concludes.
Not their first time in this office
Context matters here. In 2021, MLS found Miami guilty of deliberately misreporting Blaise Matuidi's salary — listing him below the designated player threshold while paying him several million dollars more off the books. Andrés Reyes should have been classified as a DP. Undisclosed agreements hid salary budget numbers for Leandro González Pírez, Nicolas Figal, and Julian Carranza. The total punishment: sporting director Paul McDonough suspended for a year, a $2 million club fine, a $250,000 personal fine for Mas, and over $2.27 million stripped in allocation money across 2022 and 2023.
That's not a club that made an honest mistake. That's a club that treated the rulebook as a suggestion and got caught. The question now is whether this tampering case reflects the same institutional mindset or a genuine misunderstanding of discovery rights protocol.
Either way, Casemiro is a Miami player. At 33, he arrives on a non-designated player deal — at least initially — on a short-term contract through summer 2027 with an option extending to 2029. The structure is deliberate: MLS salary cap calculations are based on guaranteed years only, unless an option has an automatic trigger. Miami know exactly what they're doing with the paperwork.
What Casemiro actually brings
Strip away the noise, and the signing itself is serious. This is a player who won the Champions League five times with Real Madrid — 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2022 — plus three La Liga titles. He joined Manchester United in 2022 and, by the end of his time there, had delivered a renaissance season: nine goals, 33 starts, and a direct contribution to United finishing third and securing Champions League football. He has 91 caps for Brazil and started at the World Cup this summer.
That's the calibre of defensive midfielder Miami are adding to a squad already built around Lionel Messi. For MLS title odds, Miami just got harder to bet against in the second half of the season.
The club plays its first post-World Cup match Wednesday night against the Chicago Fire — a match that should feature Robert Lewandowski's debut for Chicago. Messi and Rodrigo De Paul won't feature after their deep World Cup run with Argentina. Casemiro, freshly signed, will likely need time before he's matchday ready.
Mas called the signing a reflection of Miami's "vision and ambition." The league is investigating whether that ambition, once again, ran ahead of the rules.
