McTominay and Mourinho go back to Manchester United, where the Portuguese coach handed him real minutes and shaped a significant part of his development. That relationship matters. Madrid aren't reportedly pursuing him right now, but if the squad starts creaking with injuries — and right now Tchouaméni, Mendy, Militão, Rodrygo, Endrick, Asencio and Thiago are all sidelined — Mourinho knows where to look.
Lewandowski Sends a Warning from the Other Side of the City
Robert Lewandowski isn't pretending Madrid don't look dangerous. Speaking to AS, the Barcelona striker was refreshingly direct: "My feeling is that after two years without winning anything, their mentality is important and they can be very strong this season." Coming from a rival's striker, that's as close to a public endorsement as Mourinho's project is going to get.
Two trophyless years have a way of sharpening a squad's hunger. Lewandowski clearly senses it. Anyone pricing up the title race should factor in a Madrid side with something to prove and a manager who knows exactly how to weaponize that chip on the shoulder.
Yan Diomande, meanwhile, is settling in. The 19-year-old winger — who moved from RB Leipzig where he won the Bundesliga Rookie of the Year award in his debut season — spoke with characteristic calm about life at the Bernabéu. "In every session, the bar is set so high that you have no choice but to raise your own level," he said. Fernando Morientes put it more bluntly at a La Liga event: "When a club pays what Real Madrid has paid for him, obviously they're absolutely certain he's going to perform."
Mbappé Named in Alleged Kidnapping Plot
The most alarming story of the day has nothing to do with football. According to Le Parisien, French investigators discovered Kylian Mbappé's name among 26 potential targets on phones seized from an alleged criminal network. An 18-year-old suspect, charged with organized gang robbery, was reportedly using phones from prison to coordinate attacks on wealthy individuals — footballers, musicians, businesspeople.
The alleged plan involved targeting Mbappé during visits to Paris. There is no indication any attempt was actually made.
Elsewhere, new signing Sergio Martínez — a 19-year-old midfielder picked up from Racing for around €3 million on August 31 — trained with the first team ahead of Friday's trip to Real Betis. He's expected to play for Castilla initially, but Mourinho is keeping him close.
Former Betis striker Daniel 'Toro' Aquino offered a timely word of caution about that fixture. Betis just lost 5-2 to Levante, but Aquino isn't reading that as a green light for Madrid: "It's very difficult to take points from them at their stadium.
