Patrick Vieira Is Senegal's New Head Coach — Born in Dakar, Built in Europe.

Senegal have turned to Patrick Vieira to lead the Lions of Teranga, appointing the former Arsenal and France captain as head coach after sacking Pape Thiaw following a Round of 32 exit at the 2026 World Cup.

Thiaw guided Senegal to the 2025 AFCON title — only for it to be stripped and handed to Morocco after a mid-game walkoff by Senegalese players and staff. Then came Belgium, a 3-2 defeat, and the end of the road. The FSF didn't hang around.

The logic behind the appointment

Vieira was born in Dakar but built his name in Europe — Cannes, Arsenal, Juventus, Inter Milan, then a winding down through Manchester City. Three Premier League titles. A World Cup and a Euro with France. Over 100 international caps. The FSF are calling this a "strategic move" to establish a "high-level technical set-up" — which is federation language for: we need someone who commands a dressing room.

Whether Vieira can translate that authority into results as a coach is a fair question. His managerial record is patchy. New York City FC, Nice, Crystal Palace, Strasbourg, Genoa — none of those stints ended with any particular momentum. Palace was the most promising; it still ended with his dismissal.

That said, international management is a different beast. Less day-to-day friction, more defined windows, and Senegal have genuine quality throughout their squad. This isn't a rebuilding job — it's a reset.

What's coming up fast

There's no settling-in period on offer. Senegal's first competitive fixtures under Vieira will be 2027 AFCON qualifiers in the September 21 to October 6 FIFA window, with Mozambique, Sudan and Ethiopia in their group. On paper, that's a group Senegal should handle — but a slow start would crank up the pressure immediately.

Meanwhile, the FSF are still appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport to reclaim their stripped 2025 AFCON title. Senegal's position is genuinely strange: they may or may not be the reigning African champions depending on how that ruling lands.

Vieira's official presentation date hasn't been confirmed yet. Given everything swirling around this appointment — the World Cup exit, the stripped title, the CAS appeal — his first press conference will be one to watch.
