Slavko Vincic Hangs Up His Whistle After World Cup Final

"One of the greatest referees in soccer history." That's how Slovenia's football federation described Slavko Vincic after he officiated the World Cup final — and then walked away from the game entirely.

The Slovenian Football Association (NZS) confirmed the 46-year-old's retirement following his appointment to the biggest match in the sport: Spain vs Argentina. It doesn't get a more fitting final act than that.

A career that hit every peak

Vincic didn't just referee big games — he was trusted with the biggest ones. Champions League final. Europa League final. Four European Championships. And now a World Cup final to close it all out. That's a CV almost no referee in the modern era can match.

The International Federation of Football History & Statistics named him the world's best referee after this summer's North American tournament. Slovenia's federation is now expected to formally recognize him as the greatest official the country has ever produced.

For UEFA, this is a genuine loss. Officials of Vincic's profile — the ones elite clubs and federations argue over for appointment to knockout matches — don't come along often. Whoever fills his slot on the Champions League referee shortlist will need years to earn that level of institutional trust.

The NZS tribute is a formality at this point

The expected honor from the Slovenian federation isn't a surprise — it's an inevitability. Vincic leaves having refereed the sport's two club showpieces and its national-team equivalent in the same career. The NZS would have a hard time making a case for anyone else.

He ends his career having been named the world's best referee the same year he oversaw a World Cup final. That's a clean exit.
