The 2028 Olympics just got a whole lot bigger for soccer fans. LA28 dropped the news Tuesday about six stadiums across the United States that will host Olympic soccer matches. And here's the smart part - they've designed the tournament to move from East to West, so teams won't be flying back and forth across the country.

Instead of the usual travel chaos, teams will progress through the tournament while moving closer to Los Angeles. All knockout rounds will happen at the iconic Rose Bowl, starting July 24, 2028. It's a travel-friendly setup that should keep players fresher for the big matches.

Five MLS Stadiums Make the Cut

The tournament kicks off at New York City FC's brand-new Etihad Park in Queens. This stadium is set to open in 2027 and will be New York City's first soccer-specific venue. That's pretty huge for the Big Apple.

LA28 clearly prioritized purpose-built soccer stadiums for this tournament. Five of the six venues are MLS homes, which means proper soccer atmosphere and sightlines.

Columbus Crew's Field, Nashville SC's Geodis Park, St. Louis CITY SC's Energizer Park, and San José Earthquakes' PayPal Park all made the list. These are modern facilities that know how to handle big soccer crowds.

Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego rounds out the selection. It's shared by San Diego State football and both San Diego FC and San Diego Wave FC. Because it's closest to the Rose Bowl geographically, it'll likely host the final group stage matches before teams head to Pasadena.

Women's Tournament Gets Historic Expansion

Here's a game-changer: the 2028 Olympics will feature more women's teams than men's for the first time ever. The women's field expands to 16 teams while the men's tournament stays at 12 teams. This makes 2028 the first female-majority Olympic Games.

The Rose Bowl will host both gold medal matches - men's on July 28 and women's on July 29, 2028. For betting fans, this expanded format means more matches to follow and potentially more value as teams adjust to the new structure.

LA28 is working with the IOC on starting some preliminary matches before the July 14 opening ceremony. More recovery time between matches could impact team performance and create interesting dynamics for later rounds.

Tickets go on presale April 2, but initially only for Southern California and Oklahoma City residents. The full schedule and match distribution for each stadium drops before April 2026, when the first general ticket window opens. Six new cities getting Olympic soccer action means way more Americans can catch world-class football without flying to LA.
