"I've always come out a champion." That's Alexis Sánchez at his introductory press conference in Montréal — 37 years old, citing Messi and Suárez as his reason for crossing the Atlantic, and showing zero interest in playing the humble veteran card.
CF Montréal announced Sánchez as their headline summer signing, and the pitch is straightforward: a squad sitting 14th in the Eastern Conference, seven points off a Wild Card spot, and second-fewest goals in the East with 25 all season. They're not in crisis, but they're underperforming where it counts. Sánchez is the bet that a single elite attacking influence can unlock what's been stuck.
What he's actually bringing
Strip away the press conference theatre and the CV is legitimately exceptional. Nearly 800 club appearances across Arsenal, Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Manchester United. Six league titles at Barça alongside the Messi he's now chasing into North America. Chile's all-time record holder with 168 caps and 51 international goals. Back-to-back Copa América titles in 2015 and 2016, both times beating Messi's Argentina in the final.
He's not wrong to put himself in the conversation with the names he mentioned. The question is which version of him Montréal are actually getting.
He hasn't played since Sevilla and admits he's not fully match fit. A potential debut against Columbus Crew on Wednesday would come on limited training. At 37, the margin for a slow start is thin — Montréal can't wait half a season for him to find his legs if they want to make a playoff push before the window closes.
The competitive picture just shifted
Sánchez signed through the 2027 Sprint Season with an option for 2027-28, so this isn't a two-month farewell tour. Montréal are clearly building around him. For a side that's been "missing that final little end product" — as director of recruitment Luca Saputo put it — the ceiling lifts meaningfully if he's anywhere near his peak output.
The Eastern Conference playoff picture is tight enough that seven points is bridgeable. But Montréal's goal tally tells you where the problem actually lives, and a healthy Sánchez directly addresses it. His arrival makes their attacking odds considerably more interesting than they were a week ago.
Whether the body actually belongs to a 25-year-old, as he claims, is something Wednesday night in Columbus might start to answer.
