The Premier League returns — and the title picture is wide open
The full domestic picture takes shape that same weekend. Manchester City welcome Bournemouth on August 23 (9 a.m. on USA), which means Erling Haaland is back in business by the third week of the month. City finishing second last season will have sharpened something in that squad. Arsenal starting as favourites and City opening as hunters — that tension alone makes this one of the more interesting title races in years, and the odds at the top of the market are going to reflect it immediately.
La Liga resumes August 15, and Spain arrives fresh off a World Cup triumph, which means the domestic season carries an unusual amount of national momentum. Barcelona — gunning for a fourth trophy in five years — open against Elche on August 23. Real Madrid, with Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham, visit Espanyol the day before. Two elite clubs, two very different identities, and roughly 24 hours separating their season openers. Lamine Yamal versus Mbappé as the headline rivalry of the European game isn't hype at this point. It's just the reality.
Bundesliga action starts August 28 on USA Network and the Fandango app, after a reported $100 million U.S. distribution deal with Versant. Harry Kane and Bayern Munich open against VfB Stuttgart. Kane's goal record in Germany has been almost absurd — backing Bayern to cover early in the season, before defences have fully settled, has historically been a decent starting point.
Messi, Leagues Cup, and the Concacaf angle
Before any of those leagues get going, there's the Leagues Cup running August 4–13 on Apple TV, Fox, and Univision. MLS clubs versus Liga MX clubs, with the top three finishers earning Concacaf Champions Cup berths. The standout fixture: Lionel Messi's Inter Miami against Monterrey on August 8 (8 p.m. on Apple TV). Knockout rounds follow from August 25.
Ligue 1 also returns August 21, with PSG — five straight French titles and a Champions League win in the bank — hosting Stade Rennais on August 23. Ousmane Dembélé leads the line. There's no obvious challenger to PSG domestically, which makes their European form the only real barometer worth watching.
