Mbappé Takes the Onze d'Or — Is the Ballon d'Or Next?

Kylian Mbappé has won the 2026 Onze d'Or, the reader-voted prize awarded by French magazine Onze Mondial to Europe's best player — and with the Ballon d'Or ceremony in London just seven days away, the timing couldn't be louder.

The Real Madrid striker's season earned it. Over 40 goals, and then a 2026 World Cup where he became the tournament's all-time leading scorer. That combination of club form and international history-making is exactly the kind of CV that wins individual awards. Onze Mondial's readers agreed, and it wasn't particularly close.

PSG's Champions League duo left behind

Mbappé finished well clear of Paris Saint-Germain pair João Neves and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia — both central to PSG's Champions League triumph this season. That they couldn't overcome him despite a European title says something about how dominant Mbappé's year was on the global stage.

The Onze d'Or has form as a Ballon d'Or predictor. Last year's winner, Ousmane Dembélé, swept both awards in 2025. Vinícius Júnior took the Onze d'Or in 2024. The overlap isn't perfect, but it's not nothing either — Mbappé's Ballon d'Or odds deserve a second look right now.

That said, this year's race is genuinely open. Several credible candidates are in the running, and the World Cup factor — while significant — doesn't automatically seal it. History has a way of complicating narratives in that Paris ceremony hall.

Where Mbappé sits in the award's history

With this win, Mbappé joins a short list of elite company. Lionel Messi holds the Onze d'Or record with four titles. Zinedine Zidane and Michel Platini each won it three times. Cristiano Ronaldo claimed two. This is Mbappé's first — but at 27, he has time to climb that particular table.

The Ballon d'Or ceremony is in London in seven days. The Onze d'Or has made its case. Now France Football makes theirs.
