Banners carrying that message will be displayed across stadiums hosting Champions League fixtures this week — from the Camp Nou to Anfield, the Emirates to the Bernabéu. It's a broad reach, and UEFA is leaning into it deliberately.
President Aleksander Čeferin put it plainly: "The entire European football family will stand together before this week's matches to express our deepest condolences and our support to the people of Nepal. We wish them strength and resilience as they continue to recover from this tragedy and its aftermath."
UEFA tributes of this kind are relatively rare outside of tragedies directly connected to the football world. Extending one to a natural disaster on the other side of the globe says something about the tone Čeferin wants to set at the top of the European game — and the platform the Champions League provides to do it.
Clubs involved this week include Barcelona, Liverpool, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Paris Saint-Germain. Combined, those fixtures will be watched by tens of millions of people. The moment of silence will reach an audience that few humanitarian gestures ever do.
The floods and landslides have left widespread destruction across Nepal. With thousands still unaccounted for, the tribute lands at a moment when the situation on the ground remains deeply uncertain.
