Gerónimo Rulli Returns to Man City — The Keeper Who Scored Against United to Win a European Final.

Manchester City have signed Gerónimo Rulli from Marseille for £2 million on a two-year contract. Low-cost, low-risk, and loaded with backstory.

The Argentine arrives as understudy to Gianluigi Donnarumma, which is a perfectly fine role for a 33-year-old World Cup winner on a modest fee. But context makes this signing more interesting than a standard backup goalkeeper deal. Rulli is the man who both scored and saved the decisive penalty as Villarreal beat Manchester United in the 2021 Europa League final. He didn't just beat them — he personally dismantled them in a shootout. City fans will appreciate that detail enormously.

A second chance at the Etihad

This is technically a return. Rulli spent the 2016-17 season at City without playing a single minute, which barely counts as a stint but technically makes him a former Blue. Football Director Hugo Viana framed it warmly: "It's a pleasure to welcome Gerónimo back to the Club." Whether Rulli counts that goalless year as part of his story is another matter.

He arrives with genuine pedigree. Eight caps for Argentina. A World Cup winner's medal from Qatar 2022. Stints at Ajax, Villarreal, and Marseille. The Europa League heroics. For a player coming in as third choice — alongside Marcus Bettinelli — that's a depth chart City's rivals probably can't match.

Rulli himself was direct about the pull: "When the chance to join Manchester City comes along you have to go for it." Hard to argue with that logic.

Trafford out, Rulli in — the numbers make sense

The timing matters. James Trafford departed for Leeds United at £40 million after a single season, a fee that dwarfs Rulli's £2m arrival by a factor of twenty. City have essentially recycled that outlay into a more experienced option who won't need bedding-in time. Donnarumma's backup spot needed filling, and filling it with a cheap, battle-tested keeper who knows big European nights is a smarter move than handing minutes to an unproven option.

City's goalkeeper market value just dropped, but their squad depth quietly got more reliable. For anyone pricing up City's Champions League odds next season, the goalkeeping department is no longer a question mark.

"My job now is to train hard, get to know the players and staff and do everything I can to reach my best level," Rulli said. Straightforward. Professional. Exactly what a backup goalkeeper should sound like.
