Inter set a €70m floor for Bastoni — Barcelona walked, but Real Madrid might not

Inter Milan have made it simple: Alessandro Bastoni costs €70 million, and nobody's getting a discount. Barcelona found that out the hard way. Real Madrid, apparently, are next in line to find out if they want him badly enough to pay it.

The 27-year-old center back has reportedly caught José Mourinho's eye as the Portuguese manager shapes his squad at the Bernabéu. That's not a trivial endorsement — Mourinho managed Inter during their 2010 treble season and knows Serie A defending as well as anyone in the game. If he's pushing for Bastoni specifically, there's a tactical logic behind it, not just name recognition.

Why Barcelona never got close

Barcelona's interest was real but soft. Inter named their price early — €70m — and that was the end of the conversation. No formal offer was submitted. Bastoni is under contract until 2028, earns around €5.5m per year, and just helped Inter win another Serie A title under Cristian Chivu. The club had zero reason to negotiate from weakness, and they didn't.

Barcelona's financial constraints are well-documented. A left-footed ball-playing center back at that valuation simply wasn't on the table for them. Their loss of interest was structural, not tactical.

Real Madrid's situation is different. They have the resources, the pull, and — crucially — an existing line of communication with Inter. The two clubs are already in talks over Denzel Dumfries, whose €20m release clause activates in July. Presidents Florentino Pérez and Beppe Marotta also met informally at the recent Corazón Classic charity match at the Bernabéu. It would be naive to think Bastoni's name didn't come up.

What this means if Real Madrid meet the price

Inter's stated position is firm, but there's a difference between refusing a lowball offer and turning down full valuation from Real Madrid. If €70m lands on Marotta's desk from the Bernabéu, the conversation changes — whether Inter like it or not.

From Bastoni's perspective, staying in Milan makes footballing sense. He's settled, valued, and playing for a title-contending side. But Real Madrid is a different kind of offer. Those don't get turned down on a whim, even by players who are happy where they are.

  • Bastoni, 27, has won three Serie A titles, Euro 2020, and multiple domestic cups with Inter
  • Inter's asking price: €70m — Barcelona never submitted a formal offer
  • Contract runs until June 2028 at approximately €5.5m per year
  • Real Madrid and Inter already in dialogue over Dumfries (€20m release clause, active in July)
  • Mourinho is reportedly an admirer and has firsthand knowledge of Serie A defending

Anyone pricing Real Madrid's defensive recruitment this summer should factor in the Dumfries deal as a potential opener — a lower-stakes transaction that keeps the channel warm while the bigger conversations develop. Inter's backline odds of staying intact beyond this window are shortening by the week.

Inter's message is consistent: no discounts, no panic sales. The only question left is whether Mourinho can convince Madrid's board that Bastoni is worth paying full price for. Given Inter's leverage, that's the only version of this deal that exists.
