They've brought in a new all-female coaching duo led by Emma Coates, splashed $1.1 million on 20-year-old U.S. midfielder Claire Hutton, and assembled a young, hungry squad ready to prove themselves.
On paper, it looks like the kind of rebuild that could surprise people. The real question is whether new coach Coates can adapt to the NWSL's chaotic pace quickly enough to make a difference.
"I think last year we really came together as a team despite anything on the field," said midfielder Hannah Bebar. That bond will be crucial as Bay FC tries to climb the standings this season. Emma Coates Brings Fresh Tactics to NWSL
Coates arrives from coaching England's U-23 national team. Her last club job was with Doncaster Rovers Belles in England's top division—a decade ago. That gap raises questions, but the players aren't worried.
"What we're most excited about is the clarity of what Emma is bringing," said midfielder Taylor Huff, who played all 26 games as a rookie last season. Players rave about Coates' tactical approach, which emphasizes playing through the midfield instead of relying on long balls.
For 19-year-old forward Onyeka Gamero, it's not just about winning—it's about how you win. "Winning 3-0 is nice, winning 1-0 is nice, but how you do it is what's most important to us," she explained. That commitment to style could mean Bay FC becomes more predictable but also more effective.
The European coaches who've struggled in NWSL should give bettors pause. But Coates noticed something different right away: American competitiveness. "I always knew how competitive American people were," she said. "That means I can focus on the detail, the playing style, the clarity we're trying to build."
Young Talent Gets National Team Recognition
The changes are already paying dividends. Both Gamero and new signing Alex Pfeiffer were called up to the U.S. U-20 national team camp. This marks Gamero's first call-up since 2023.
Coates takes player development seriously. She's been in contact with U.S. coach Emma Hayes and England's Sarina Wiegman to support players' international ambitions. "Our job is to get as many players as we can on the roads to Brazil," Coates said, referencing the 2027 World Cup.
For several Bay FC players, working with Coates represents another first—their first female head coach. "Growing up and having role models like that, especially for younger girls and seeing the change in the growth of our sport is super important," Bebar noted.
Bay FC's season opener against expansion side Denver Summit on March 14 will tell us a lot. A strong start could shift the narrative completely. A slow one might confirm fears that European coaching styles don't translate quickly to NWSL's intensity.
The talent is there. The coaching philosophy sounds promising. Now Bay FC just needs to prove it on the field—and show that last year's 13th-place finish was the outlier, not the expectation.
