"I NEED HELP @realDonaldTrump!" That's Joan Capdevila — 2010 World Cup winner, left-back for Spain's greatest generation — posting on X on Friday, two days before Spain face Argentina in the final he can't get into.
His ESTA was denied. His kids won't see the game with him. And the reason, he believes, is a friendly match he played in Iran back in 2016 — a La Liga legends exhibition against an Iranian all-star side in Tehran.
A political footnote, a personal gut punch
Capdevila, 48, wanted to reunite with his former team-mates at MetLife Stadium and watch Spain chase a second World Cup title. Instead, he's calling on Marco Rubio, tagging the Spanish sports ministry, and going viral for all the wrong reasons.
"You have no idea how excited I was to be there with all my 2010 team-mates and this team to cheer them on," he told his followers. "I can't believe they're not letting me into the USA... and that I'll miss a moment like this with my kids who love soccer so much."
It reads like a gut punch. Because it is one.
He's not alone in this situation either. Somali referee Omar Artan — the 2025 CAF men's referee of the year — was denied entry at Miami International Airport on June 8th and pulled from the tournament entirely. US officials cited his "association with suspected members of terror organisations." That one had serious diplomatic ripples. Capdevila's case may be smaller in scale, but it's louder on social media, and the optics of barring a World Cup winner from watching his country in a World Cup final are hard to spin.
The final goes ahead, with or without him
Spain sealed their place in the final by beating France 2-0 in Dallas on Tuesday. Argentina came back from a goal down to beat England 2-1 on Wednesday, booking their spot in a second consecutive final. It's the European champions against the Copa América holders — the biggest game in football, in a country that is increasingly complicated to get into.
BBC Sport has contacted the White House for comment. Whether that call gets returned before Sunday's 20:00 BST kickoff is another matter entirely.
