Casemiro Told LA Galaxy He 'Only Wanted' Them — Then Signed for Inter Miami.

"He only wanted to play for the Galaxy." That's what LA Galaxy general manager Will Kuntz says Casemiro told the club — two months before the Brazilian declared he'd always wanted to join Inter Miami.

The contradiction is at the heart of an MLS tampering investigation that was launched minutes after Casemiro's Inter Miami signing was announced in July. The 34-year-old joined Lionel Messi's side on a free transfer from Manchester United, signing a deal through the end of the 2027 MLS season with an option to extend to June 2029.

Discovery rights and a settlement that raises more questions

The core issue is MLS's discovery rights system — a rule dating back to the league's founding in 1996 that gives a specific club first refusal on a player who wants to join the league. LA Galaxy held those rights for Casemiro. Inter Miami signed him anyway, then announced after the fact that they had acquired those rights from the Galaxy.

Kuntz confirmed a settlement has been reached between the two clubs over the discovery priority, though the financial terms won't be disclosed until the tampering probe concludes. That's a significant caveat — settling the discovery question doesn't make the tampering investigation disappear.

Casemiro, for his part, has been direct about his reasoning: "When I spoke to [the Galaxy], I made it very clear which team I wanted to join in the MLS and that is Inter Miami because of the project, the hope and of course to play with the best player of all time."

That's the version he's telling now. Kuntz's version has him singing a very different tune just weeks earlier.

What this means beyond the headlines

For Inter Miami, the risk is real. MLS tampering investigations can result in fines, transfer bans, or allocation order penalties — none of which they can afford as they build a squad around Messi. The settlement with the Galaxy removes one obstacle, but the league's own probe is still live.

  • Casemiro joined Inter Miami on a free transfer from Manchester United
  • LA Galaxy held his MLS discovery rights at the time of the signing
  • A settlement between the clubs has been reached, terms undisclosed
  • The MLS tampering investigation remains open

The Galaxy, meanwhile, come out of this looking either naive or complicit depending on which version of events you believe. Either they were strung along by a player who had already made up his mind, or there's more to the timeline than Kuntz is letting on publicly.

"The league is gathering all relevant information and will refrain from further comment until the review is complete," MLS said. The investigation is ongoing — and so is the awkward question of whether Casemiro simply told both clubs what they wanted to hear.
