Thousands of fans left long, emotional messages. Haaland, who had just turned 26, surveyed the outpouring of affection from his loved ones and settled on a single syllable.

It went viral immediately, because of course it did. But here's the thing — there's something almost admirable about a man who refuses to perform emotion for the internet even when the internet is specifically watching. Haaland doesn't do theatre. On the pitch, off it, or in his girlfriend's Instagram comments.
His own birthday post wasn't exactly florid either. A photo of himself in a Viking helmet on the yacht deck, captioned: "26 years. Nice!" The exclamation mark might be the most expressive he's ever been publicly.
The celebration itself was genuinely low-key for someone of his profile — a close circle of family and friends, a food spread of meats, cheeses, and fruit, a mini-golf setup on the deck. No bottle-service nightclub. No celebrity guest list. Haaland and Johansen have been together since around 2021, roots going back to their youth days at Bryne FK in Norway, and they welcomed their first child in late 2024. By his own account, their downtime involves cooking at home, playing video games, and ordering kebabs.
The summer itself had already been eventful before the birthday. Norway reached the World Cup quarter-finals, a historic run that Haaland led from the front. A yacht trip in the aftermath feels earned.
As for Manchester City's season ahead — a fully rested, apparently unbothered Haaland is not what opposing defences want to see. His goal-scoring odds will stay short. So will his Instagram responses.
