"We have to stick together, enjoy the ride and smile." That's Erling Haaland's response to Manchester City being found guilty of breaking Premier League financial rules — a verdict that could end with the club being expelled from the top flight.
It's not the most combative reaction. But Haaland, who has scored five goals in five Premier League appearances this season, knows his job is to score goals, not manage a legal crisis. The framing — stay positive, stay united — is what a striker says when the lawyers are already handling the rest.
What the commission actually found
This wasn't a paperwork error or a technicality. An independent commission determined that City arranged "sham" contracts with commercial partners to artificially inflate revenues and reduce costs across nine seasons, from 2009 to 2018. That's a sustained, structured approach to bending the rules — not a one-off mistake.
City has lodged an appeal. The sanctions haven't been handed down yet, but expulsion from the Premier League sits at the extreme end of what's possible. Even a points deduction at this stage of the season would reshape the title race significantly. City's odds of winning a consecutive championship just became one of the most volatile markets in English football.
Liverpool at Anfield, first up
The timing couldn't be more pointed. City's first match since the verdict is at Anfield — hostile at the best of times, and this is far from the best of times. Haaland was direct about what that demands: "No matter what happens in life, we have always have to have a smile. So we have to stay positive, look ahead and try to win football games."
Simple enough in theory. Considerably harder when sixty thousand Liverpool fans are reminding you of the verdict for ninety minutes.
City's response on the pitch might tell you more than any press conference. But the commission's findings aren't going away regardless of the result.
