IHS Joins Forces With Spires 5-Aside as Lagos Street Football Gets Serious Backing.

Three years of running a street football tournament alone, and Spires Media has finally found a corporate partner that matches its ambition. Telecommunications infrastructure giant IHS — the company behind more than 16,000 mobile towers across Nigeria — is coming on board for the 2026 Lagos State Championship edition of the Spires 5-Aside Naija Street Soccer Tournament.

The deal was unveiled in Lagos on Wednesday, with the Lagos State Sports Commission in the room. That last detail matters. Government sports bodies don't usually show up for small launches. The fact that Commission Director-General Lekan Fatodu attended in person — and then publicly called this "the most professionally run 5-Aside tournament, not only in Nigeria but across the West African sub-region" — signals that this event has moved well beyond grassroots hobby status.

What the partnership actually brings

IHS's angle here is connectivity, literally and figuratively. The company specializes in bringing telecommunications infrastructure to underserved communities, so plugging into a street football project rooted in Lagos neighborhoods fits a clear corporate narrative. What it means practically for the tournament — beyond funding — should become clearer on September 1, when the next phase of the partnership is unveiled alongside the Lagos State Football Association.

Spires CEO Bankole Allibay put it plainly: "We have done this alone in the last three years and the successes recorded are there for everyone to see. Now imagine what we can achieve with this partnership." That's not a boast. That's a challenge to his own ambitions now that the safety net exists.

The third season of the tournament kicks off October 24, with 16 teams drawn from five divisions across Lagos competing for the championship. Sixteen teams, five divisions, one city that takes football very seriously — the competitive structure is already there. The question is how much further institutional money and IHS's innovation can push it.

For a tournament that's built its reputation entirely on organic growth, the September 1 reveal with the Lagos FA will be the real indicator of how transformative this partnership intends to be.
