Jorge Messi died on August 8 at a clinic in Rosario, Argentina. He was 68. The man who coached Lionel as a boy at Grandoli, fought to fund his hormone treatment, moved his family to Barcelona, and eventually became his son's agent is gone — and football lost more than a footnote.
Newell's Old Boys put it plainly in their statement: Jorge was "the pillar and the person who, with vision, rigor and affection, supported the career of the best player of all time." That's not sentiment. That's a fair summary of what he actually did.
The move that changed everything
When a young Lionel was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency, treatment costs were beyond what a working-class family in Rosario could absorb. Jorge took him to Spain anyway. FC Barcelona eventually covered the costs through La Masia — but only because Jorge got him there first.
"I come from a working class family, my father worked all day and we lived in a rather modest neighbourhood," Lionel told France Football. "My parents instilled in me respect, especially for others, as well as hard work and humility."
Lionel spent years seeing his mother only once every four months during those early Barcelona years. He never left. Jorge stayed with him through all of it.
From the touchline to the boardroom
As Lionel's career scaled into territory nobody had mapped before, Jorge scaled with it — transitioning from youth coach and father to full-time agent and business manager. He defended Lionel publicly when Argentine fans turned on him after the 2010 World Cup exit, calling the criticism "unfair" and pointing out the contradiction of a country that loved him in Barcelona and booed him at home.
He raised four children — Rodrigo, Matías, María Sol and Lionel — with wife Celia Cuccittini in Rosario before the family relocated to Spain. Celia and the siblings eventually returned to Argentina. Jorge stayed.
Dr. Carlos Mackey, medical director of Sanatorio Centro, confirmed the death, with further details withheld at the family's request.
"His constant accompaniment and leadership behind the scenes were fundamental to supporting Lionel's every step, from his beginnings in Malvinas to the maximum glory of world football," Newell's added. That's the version of Jorge Messi history will remember.
