From Fishing Town to Champions League Glory: Bodø/Glimt's Incredible Journey

Talk about a fairytale story. Bodø/Glimt, a small club from a Norwegian fishing town, just pulled off one of the most remarkable runs in Champions League history. And the timing? Absolutely perfect.

While the big European giants were busy trying to create their exclusive Super League back in 2021, Bodø/Glimt hadn't even played in the Champions League yet. Fast forward five years, and they've just beaten Manchester City, Atletico Madrid, and Inter Milan twice in four straight wins. That's not a typo.

At Friday's Champions League draw, the contrast couldn't be starker. On one side, you have Real Madrid facing Man City for the fifth season in a row. On the other, Bodø/Glimt drawn against Sporting Lisbon in their first-ever Champions League knockout round.

"For modern football I think it's important that a club like ours are a bigger part of this," CEO Frode Thomassen told the Associated Press. He's not wrong. This is exactly the kind of story football needs.

From 40 Employees to Champions League Contenders

Here's the crazy part. Back in 2017, Bodø/Glimt had just 40 employees total, including players. Their entire budget? A measly 4.2 million euros. Compare that to the giants they're now beating.

Thomassen and coach Kjetil Knutsen both joined in 2017 and built something special. It started with a Champions League qualifying loss to Legia Warsaw in July 2021. But they kept climbing, reaching the Europa Conference League quarterfinals that season.

The breakthrough came last August when they finally cracked the Champions League proper. After a slow start with no wins in their first six games, they suddenly found their rhythm. Four straight wins against European royalty later, and their Instagram followers doubled to over 400,000.

What This Means Moving Forward

The financial rewards are piling up nicely. Last season brought in 26 million euros. This year? They're approaching 61 million euros if they match Club Brugge's run from last season. Beat Sporting, and they pocket another 12.5 million euros for reaching the quarterfinals.

For bettors who backed Bodø/Glimt in their recent matches, the rewards have been massive. Few gave them a chance against Man City or Inter Milan. Those brave enough to take the odds are celebrating now.

"It's not always about money, it's about the people and what kind of effort you put into it," Thomassen explained. Their secret? Team chemistry that feels like family, mostly Norwegian and Danish players who genuinely care about each other.

They're even building a new 10,000-seat stadium on the edge of town. Not bad for a club that was playing with amateur budgets less than a decade ago.

Next up is Sporting Lisbon in the round of 16. Win that, and they'll face either Arsenal or Bayer Leverkusen in the quarterfinals. Don't bet against them at this point. This Cinderella story isn't ending anytime soon.
