Klopp sparks Germany World Cup row before a ball is kicked.

Lothar Matthaus put it bluntly: "Jürgen Klopp, of all people, should know better." And that quote tells you everything about the mood in Germany's camp right now.

Klopp, working as a TV pundit after leaving Liverpool, and former Germany forward Thomas Muller have publicly called for Jamal Musiala to be dropped for Sunday's opening World Cup group game against Curacao in favour of Deniz Undav. That's not a minor disagreement over a formation — that's two of Germany's most recognisable football names publicly undermining the starting XI before the tournament begins.

Head coach Julian Nagelsmann handled it diplomatically in his press conference, stopping short of criticising Klopp directly: "Thomas and Jurgen are cool guys. They have had a lot of success in the world of soccer. They can talk about anything they want to talk about. But I will concentrate on my team and on my work." Diplomatic, yes. A ringing endorsement of the commentary? Not quite.

Matthaus doesn't hold back

Matthaus, who lifted the World Cup trophy as West Germany captain in 1990, was far less measured. His criticism of Klopp was pointed: "I feel it lacks sensitivity... Klopp's comments aren't exactly making Nagelsmann's job any easier."

He also raised a fair point — would Klopp have welcomed a pundit advising him to bench a key player before a Champions League knockout tie? Almost certainly not.

The timing matters too. Klopp is reportedly in the frame to replace Nagelsmann if Germany underperform. Whether that's Klopp angling for positioning or just poor punditry judgment, it casts a shadow over what should be a routine opener.

Neuer starts, and Nagelsmann backs his keeper

Amid the noise, Nagelsmann confirmed Manuel Neuer will start in goal against Curacao, ending weeks of uncertainty following the Bayern keeper's calf injury and controversial recall after reversing his international retirement. Oliver Baumann had held the jersey throughout qualifying and the warm-ups — but Neuer gets the nod.

Nagelsmann also confirmed Nathaniel Brown at wing-back, and echoed Matthaus on one thing at least: Germany need Neuer at his best. "In order to have a good World Cup, we need to have Manuel in top top performance level, and I think he can bring that."

As for Musiala — everything suggests he starts, Klopp's advice notwithstanding. Germany's attacking odds look considerably shakier if their best creative player is unsettled heading into the tournament, so whoever ends up in the XI, the dressing room noise is the real concern right now.
