Mbappé Won't Follow Ronaldo's Path to 41 — But His Ballon d'Or Case Is a Different Story.

"France will never let me play until I'm 41," Mbappé said with a laugh — and honestly, he's not wrong. Representing Les Bleus is a physical toll few countries match, and the 27-year-old isn't pretending otherwise.

Speaking to BILD, Mbappé was asked directly whether he'd follow Cristiano Ronaldo's example of playing deep into his forties. His answer was diplomatic toward his idol, honest about himself. "Cristiano proves that if you're physically and mentally fit, you can play at this high level for a long time. In my case, though, I don't believe that's possible."

Fair enough. Not everyone is built like Ronaldo, and knowing your own ceiling is a form of self-awareness most footballers lack entirely.

The Ballon d'Or picture is messier than Mbappé's stats suggest

On numbers alone, Mbappé's 2025-26 season is difficult to argue with. Top scorer in La Liga. Top scorer in the Champions League with 15 — a tally only Ronaldo has ever beaten in a single edition. He became the all-time leading goalscorer at the World Cup this summer. He told France Football he believes he can win the Ballon d'Or, calling his individual achievements "breathtaking." That's not arrogance. That's a read of the numbers.

But the Ballon d'Or has never been purely about goals, and Mbappé's rivals know it. Harry Kane outscored him across club and country with 73 goals total, and Kane won trophies. Lamine Yamal and Ousmane Dembélé both lifted silverware. Real Madrid, meanwhile, went blank across every competition — and France fell to Spain in the World Cup semifinal.

That's the problem. The goals are there. The team results aren't.

José Mourinho weighed in on Mbappé's behalf, telling reporters: "You cannot give the Ballon d'Or to a player simply because he won the Champions League or the World Cup. The best player in the world is something else and he is neither at PSG nor in the Spain team." Classic Mourinho — backing his player while taking a swipe at everyone else in the room.

Eight nominations, never higher than third

Mbappé has been nominated eight times and peaked at third place in 2023. That's the stubborn stat voters will carry into the room. In a year without an obvious favourite, he has the best individual case on paper — but Kane's volume, Yamal's age-defying impact, and Dembélé's winners' medal all complicate the maths.

If he doesn't win it this time, with these numbers, in this open a field, it's hard to imagine when the window gets clearer.
