ICC Chairman Jay Shah marked the occasion with a tribute rooted in something more personal than statistics. "Your profound humility stood out just as much as your unmatched genius on the pitch," Shah wrote on Instagram, recalling Messi's visit to India where he presented the Argentine with a national cricket team jersey. A cross-sport moment, but a telling one — Messi's reach extended well beyond football's usual borders.

Whether Miami can close that gap with an ageing but still functioning Messi is the question MLS will spend the rest of this season answering.
As tributes go, Shah's was understated in the right way. Not the trophy haul, not the Ballon d'Or collection — the humility. "Personally presenting you with our national colors remains a proud cross-sport moment." That's the version of Messi that outlasts the goals: the one who apparently made an ICC chairman feel like the meeting mattered.
