Messi's Gold Jersey and One Last Goodbye to Argentina.

"One last match... A jersey for a lifetime." Messi posted that on Instagram alongside a photo of a special kit bearing his name and iconic number 10 in bold gold — the colours feel deliberate. This isn't a retirement quietly confirmed in a press release. It's a sendoff built for the cameras, the fans, and the history books.

The match itself is October 6 against Benin at River Plate's stadium in Buenos Aires. Argentina are playing three friendlies between September 21 and October 6 — Bolivia on September 30 in Córdoba, Burkina Faso on October 3, then Benin for the finale. Messi, Rodrigo De Paul, and Giovani Lo Celso will only feature in that last one. Scaloni is managing this carefully.

What he actually did for Argentina

The career summary sells itself without embellishment. 203 appearances. 109 goals. Three major international titles. A 2021 Copa America that ended 28 years of hurt. A 2022 World Cup final in Qatar where he scored twice, then converted the decisive penalty in a shootout Argentina won 4-2 after it finished 3-3. A Copa America retention in 2024. And a 2026 World Cup run that ended with eight goals and four assists — including his first World Cup hat-trick, against Algeria.

He finishes as the second-highest World Cup scorer of all time with 21 goals across six tournaments. Argentina's most-capped player. Their all-time top scorer. The 2005 senior debut to 2025 retirement is a 20-year arc most footballers don't get to dream about, let alone complete.

Eight Ballon d'Or awards. And he'll keep playing — Inter Miami and MLS aren't going anywhere.

Why October 6 matters beyond the sentiment

There's something worth sitting with here: Messi spent years absorbing the weight of Argentina's expectations and falling short — 2014 World Cup final lost to Germany, 2016 Copa America final lost to Chile on penalties. The version of Messi walking out in Buenos Aires on October 6 is the one who actually delivered. That distinction matters. He doesn't leave as the player who couldn't win the big one. He leaves as the one who won them all.

The gold lettering on that jersey isn't subtle. Neither is the legacy.
