"I feel I am the right person for the job." Áine O'Gorman said it plainly, without fanfare — and given what she's bringing to Bray Wanderers, it's hard to argue.
The former Republic of Ireland international, capped 119 times across a career that took her through Peamount United, UCD Waves and Shamrock Rovers, has been appointed academy director at Bray. She's the first woman to hold the position at any League of Ireland club. That's not a symbolic gesture — it's a structural shift in how the LOI is starting to think about who builds its foundations.
What the role actually involves
This isn't a coaching gig. O'Gorman is stepping back from her role with the women's Under-17s — a team she helped guide to Tier One promotion after joining last season — to take on something broader and, frankly, more complex. Six teams, 120 players, multiple coaching staff, athletic development, personal development off the pitch. The job is coordination and culture, not cones and drills.
Last weekend she was already in Liverpool with the men's development squad for games against Liverpool, Aston Villa and Sheffield United. The scope is clear.
The role exists partly because of a €3m government funding allocation to the FAI and LOI last October, specifically earmarked for academy development nationwide. That money has unlocked full-time positions across the country. Bray landed a good one.
Bray Women face an immediate test
The women's side, now part of the newly formed Under-23s Development League, have a sharp reminder of where they stand on Saturday. They travel to Tolka Park to face Shelbourne in the FAI Cup second round — arguably the toughest possible draw in their inaugural season.
O'Gorman didn't shy away from it: "Probably one of the favourites to win the cup outright." Under-23s and some stepping-up Under-17s, away from home, against one of the country's best women's sides. It's a real test, not a managed one.
For a club built around its community in Wicklow, the direction is clear. Whether the results follow is the question Bray will be answering for the next few seasons.
