Ronaldo Gets a €255 Fine and 30-Day Ban — But He'll Be Back for Portugal in November.

Cristiano Ronaldo submitted his sports CV as evidence to a disciplinary committee. That sentence alone tells you everything you need to know about how September's Portugal camp drama ended up.

The Portuguese FA's disciplinary council found the charges against Ronaldo "fully substantiated" on Monday, handing the 41-year-old a 30-day suspension and a €255 fine for walking out of the national team camp on September 30 after being an unused substitute against Norway. He subsequently missed the final two games of the international break.

The €255 figure will dominate the headlines. It is, obviously, a rounding error on a rounding error for one of the most commercially successful athletes the sport has ever produced. The council actually reduced the fine in light of his "contributions to soccer and his recognition for athletic merit" — hence the CV submission. Which is a detail so absurd it almost circles back to being admirable.

The number that actually matters

Thirty days. That's the real sanction, and it's been backdated to the date of the offence. By the time Monday's ruling landed, Ronaldo had 11 days left to serve. Portugal's next fixtures — against Denmark on November 14 and Wales three days later in the Nations League — are both within reach.

Head coach Jorge Jesus has already said he expects Ronaldo to be available. Ronaldo himself made clear in his 1,740-word October statement — an extraordinary document by any measure — that he has no intention of retiring. He apologised to his team-mates for the disruption, placed the blame squarely on Jesus for allegedly breaking a promise over playing time, and accused the manager of failing to deliver an agreed version of events at a subsequent press conference.

Jesus, 72, is no pushover. He and Ronaldo won the Saudi Pro League together at Al-Nassr in 2025-26, so there's history. But a public falling-out this early in an international tenure — sparked by substitute appearances and broken handshakes — is not the foundation anyone wanted.

What it means going forward

The disciplinary report runs to 28 pages. The committee found Ronaldo had "unjustifiably abandoned" the squad and ignored a "special duty of restraint" given his ability to foresee the consequences of his exit. That's pointed language, even if the financial penalty is laughably small.

Portugal's Nations League odds won't shift much on the back of this — the suspension is effectively served. The real question is whether Ronaldo walks back into a squad where the atmosphere has genuinely cleared, or whether he and Jesus are operating a professional truce held together with press conference platitudes.

The verdict is in. Whether the dressing room has fully moved on is a different case entirely.
