Parker Out at Burnley: Gerrard Favourite as Clarets Look Ahead to the Championship.

Steven Gerrard is the frontrunner to become Burnley's next permanent manager, according to the Daily Mail — and given the mess Scott Parker is leaving behind, the role is less glamorous than it sounds.

Parker's exit was confirmed Thursday by mutual consent, ending a tenure that followed a now-familiar pattern: one Championship promotion, one Premier League implosion. Burnley made a reasonable start to the season before collapsing completely. One win since October. Nineteen weeks in the relegation zone. Mathematically done after last week's defeat to Manchester City. The numbers don't leave much room for a generous reading.

Gerrard steps into a rebuild job

It's been 15 months since Gerrard last managed a side — Al Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia, a stint nobody talks about in flattering terms. His only Premier League experience came at Aston Villa, where he guided them to 14th in 2021-22 before results deteriorated sharply. Eight games into the following season, he was gone. Unai Emery inherited a similar squad and turned them into a Champions League regular. That comparison follows Gerrard everywhere.

The Championship is a different proposition entirely — grind over glamour, Tuesday nights in Preston, squad depth under relentless fixture pressure. Frank Lampard has found some success there with Coventry City, and Gerrard is reportedly watching that closely. Whether that translates into an appetite for the same challenge at Burnley is a genuine question.

Burnley's betting odds to bounce straight back up will hinge heavily on who they appoint. A Gerrard project with his first full pre-season since Villa is a gamble — potentially a worthwhile one, but a gamble nonetheless.

Jackson holds the fort for four games

In the meantime, Mike Jackson returns as interim for Burnley's final four league fixtures. He's done this before — stepped in when Sean Dyche was sacked in April 2022 and immediately went on a run of 10 points from four games that earned him Premier League Manager of the Month. That sequence couldn't save Burnley from relegation then, and it won't change their fate now.

Bristol City have also been mentioned as a potential destination for Gerrard, which suggests his options aren't limited to Turf Moor. Burnley will need to move quickly and persuasively if they want to beat out the Championship competition for his signature.

"He leaves with the respect and gratitude of everyone connected with Burnley Football Club," the club statement read of Parker. Polite. Procedural. About as warm as a season that ended in 19th place deserves.
