Someone thought it would be a good idea to kick a rugby ball off a rooftop and into the Gtech Community Stadium during Brentford's Premier League match against Liverpool on Saturday. It wasn't. Now the police are involved.
A video circulating on social media shows a man booting the ball from a nearby rooftop towards the stadium, where it appears to bounce off the roof. A second clip shows stadium staff carrying it away from the pitch area. The fact that it reached the field of play — during a live top-flight match, with players, officials, and thousands of fans present — is the part that should genuinely concern people.
The club's position is clear
Brentford didn't mince words in their statement: "Such behaviour is dangerous and potentially very harmful." They've referred the matter to police and say they're supporting the investigation. Criminal prosecution is explicitly on the table.
The Gtech Community Stadium's geography makes this kind of stunt uniquely possible — it's hemmed in by residential and commercial buildings on all sides, which gives the stadium its distinctive urban character but also creates obvious vulnerabilities. Saturday was a reminder of that.
The incident is separate from the result, but it's hard to ignore the backdrop. Brentford lost 2-1, surrendering a first-half lead before finishing with nine men. It was the kind of afternoon where everything went wrong. The rooftop antics were just the strangest entry on a grim list.
Where Brentford go from here
The Bees sit sixth in the Premier League table on 10 points from seven games — a decent return, though Saturday's performance and the manner of the defeat will have Thomas Frank rethinking his lineup ahead of Sunday's trip to Hull City. A club investigating a potential criminal incident while also trying to bounce back from a chaotic home loss has enough on its plate without worrying about their stadium's rooftop perimeter.
The club says matchday safety is of "utmost importance." Right now, proving that means finding whoever kicked that ball — and making sure it can't happen again.
