Sam Nicholson Signs for Livingston Days After the Penalty That Decided the Title

Sam Nicholson is heading to Livingston, and he's leaving Motherwell with a story he'll be telling for the rest of his career — whether he wants to or not.

The 32-year-old winger has signed a pre-contract with the Championship side, just days after his arm became the most debated body part in Scottish football. Nicholson jumped to contest a ball in the Fir Park box on Wednesday night, VAR called referee John Beaton to the monitor, and suddenly a 2-2 draw in added time became a Celtic penalty. Kelechi Iheanacho scored in the 98th minute. Final score: 3-2. Title race: effectively over.

One angle, one call, one title

Motherwell manager Jens Berthel Askou called it "one of the worst decisions he has seen in his career." Looking at the footage, it's hard to argue. The VAR review appeared to work from a single camera angle, the contact was marginal at best, and the timing — 98th minute, title on the line — made every frame carry enormous weight.

A 2-2 draw would have left Celtic needing to beat Hearts by three clear goals on the final day. They did win that game 3-1, but whether they'd have chased three goals rather than one is a question that can't be answered cleanly. Celtic won the title. The handball call is why that was ever straightforward.

From a betting perspective, those final-day markets turned on a knife edge. Anyone holding Celtic draw no bet or handicap positions on that Motherwell game will have very mixed feelings about VAR.

Nicholson moves on

For his part, Nicholson kept his exit message clean. "I just want to pass on my gratitude for the support I have received during a tough time in my career," he said on the Motherwell website, referencing a difficult couple of injury-hit seasons at Fir Park.

Livingston, freshly relegated from the Premiership, are building for a Championship campaign and see Nicholson as a ready-made wide option. His CV is longer than most at this level — over 100 appearances for Hearts, more than 100 in MLS with Minnesota United and Colorado Rapids, spells at Bristol Rovers, and now a full season in the Scottish top flight under his belt.

Motherwell, meanwhile, finish fourth and go into Europe next season. They'll do it without Nicholson — and without any official apology from the SFA for the call that overshadowed their best league finish in years.
