Seven Ballon d'Or Nominees Who Won't Be Where You Last Saw Them.

The 2026 summer window didn't just move players around — it reshuffled several of the game's most decorated names in ways that will actually change how you watch the next season. Seven Ballon d'Or nominees have switched clubs, and the directions they've gone tell you a lot about where football's elite are in their careers.

Real Madrid are the biggest winners on paper. They've added Bernardo Silva from Manchester City on a free transfer and Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan, addressing both their creative midfield depth and their right-back situation in one window. Silva, nominated three times for the Ballon d'Or with a best finish of ninth, spent nine years collecting trophies at City. He arrives at the Bernabéu with pedigree and peak-years experience. Dumfries, who earned his first Ballon d'Or nomination in 2025, brings proven Champions League quality to a side that never stops chasing the next one. That's two serious additions. Real Madrid's odds across every major competition just got shorter.

The MLS drain continues — but these aren't panic moves

Three of the seven are heading to the United States, and it's worth being clear-eyed about what that means. Robert Lewandowski leaving Barcelona for Chicago Fire ends a European career that produced nine Ballon d'Or nominations and a second-place finish in 2021. He also won the Gerd Müller Trophy in 2022. At this stage of his career, MLS is a destination, not a stepping stone — and there's no shame in that. Chicago Fire are getting one of the most clinical strikers of his generation.

Antoine Griezmann makes the same move, joining Orlando City after ending his time at Atlético Madrid. Five Ballon d'Or nominations, two third-place finishes (2016 and 2018), a World Cup winner's medal — Orlando are getting a footballer who knows exactly what he is and how to perform at the highest level. Casemiro completes the MLS trio, joining Inter Miami and linking up with Lionel Messi after a difficult spell at Manchester United. His 2022 Ballon d'Or nomination feels like a lifetime ago given recent form, but his reading of the game doesn't vanish overnight.

Grimaldo and Aubameyang head back to Spain

On the European side, Alejandro Grimaldo has left Bayer Leverkusen for Atlético Madrid, returning to La Liga after playing a central role in Leverkusen's historic unbeaten Bundesliga season and Spain's Euro win. His 2024 Ballon d'Or nomination was earned. Atlético get a left-back who thrives in high-press systems — Diego Simeone will know exactly how to use him.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, three Ballon d'Or nominations to his name with an 11th-place finish in 2016, has signed for Deportivo La Coruña after leaving Marseille. At this point in his career, that's a story about a footballer finding a place to play rather than one chasing titles.

  • Robert Lewandowski — FC Barcelona → Chicago Fire
  • Antoine Griezmann — Atlético Madrid → Orlando City
  • Casemiro — Manchester United → Inter Miami
  • Bernardo Silva — Manchester City → Real Madrid
  • Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang — Marseille → Deportivo La Coruña
  • Denzel Dumfries — Inter Milan → Real Madrid
  • Alejandro Grimaldo — Bayer Leverkusen → Atlético Madrid

The window has reshuffled the European power balance more than it's drained it. Real Madrid strengthened. Atlético added quality. The MLS got three genuinely decorated players. The Ballon d'Or ceremony will honour what these men did — but the 2026/27 season will be where we find out who still has something left to give.
