Turkey fire Montella after Nations League collapse and World Cup exit

Four losses in a row was enough. Turkey have sacked Vincenzo Montella, with the Turkish Football Federation confirming the decision Friday without naming a replacement or offering a single word of explanation.

The timing is brutal in its logic. Montella's Turkey just lost 3-1 to his home country, Italy, in the Nations League on Tuesday — a result that apparently sealed the verdict that had probably been forming for weeks. The team also failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, going out in the group stage. That's two major failures stacked on top of each other, and no amount of quarter-final goodwill survives that combination.

A reign that peaked too early

To be fair to Montella, guiding Turkey to the Euro 2024 quarter-finals was a genuine achievement. He took charge in September 2023 and within a year had the team competing at the sharp end of a major tournament. That was the high point, and it turned out to be the ceiling.

What followed was a freefall. Four consecutive Nations League defeats don't just cost points — they cost credibility, and in international management, credibility is essentially the whole job. Once a squad stops believing in the system, the results get messier and messier. Turkey's did.

Without a replacement named, the federation is either still negotiating or deliberately keeping options open. Either way, Turkey's Nations League campaign is already in pieces, and whoever walks into that job inherits a squad that needs a reset — tactically and mentally.

The market on Turkey's next competitive fixtures just became genuinely unpredictable. A new manager, unknown identity, inheriting a team mid-tournament? That's not a project, that's a salvage operation.

The TFF gave no reason for the decision. Sometimes the four losses say everything that needs saying.
