Ferran Torres on the MAGA Hat, Barcelona's Future, and Why He's More Nervous About Baseball.

Ferran Torres scored the goal that won Spain the World Cup. Then he put on a red cap that caught Donald Trump's attention, and suddenly the football story became something else entirely.

The Barcelona forward addressed the controversy on CNN, and his explanation was about as apolitical as it gets: "It was a funny moment because it was not about politics. Because, honestly, I don't know about politics. It was just to be able to see Spain again on the top, winning the World Cup, and it was just to have fun with my friends, with my family."

That's probably true. It's also probably naive. Wearing a red cap that reads "Make Spain Great Again" — however innocently — in the immediate aftermath of a final attended by Trump was always going to get seized on by people looking for a signal. And it was. The political right, Trump included, ran with it. Torres didn't intend to hand them ammunition, but he did.

The Barcelona question is more interesting

The hat is a footnote. What actually matters for anyone tracking Torres' club career is where he ends up next season.

He's been at Barcelona since 2022, signed from Manchester City, and his future there is far from settled. Asked directly about a potential move — with Paris Saint-Germain floated as a destination — Torres gave the standard non-denial: "You never know because in football everything can change in one minute, so I have to be ready for everything."

He added that he's "trying to think what is going to be the most happy thing for me and for my family." That's not a player comfortable and committed at his current club. That's a player keeping his options open. PSG just won the Champions League and are rebuilding their attack — Torres' odds of landing there aren't as long as they might look.

For now, his answer on the immediate future was blunt: "On 12th of August I have to stay there and train with them so let's see what happens." August. Not July. Not pre-season. That gap is worth watching.

One final detail worth keeping

Torres also mentioned he's more nervous about throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at a New York Yankees game than he was before the World Cup final. The man scored the winning goal at a World Cup and he's losing sleep over baseball. At least his priorities are entertaining.
