Zlatko Dalic is out. Nine years, a World Cup final, two podium finishes — and ultimately, a 2-1 loss to Portugal in the Round of 32 that made the decision for him.
The Croatian Football Federation confirmed on Wednesday that Dalic has stepped down, less than a week after that early exit from the 2026 World Cup. The timing says everything. He wasn't pushed, but he didn't have much of a case for staying either.
What he actually built
Let's be precise about the achievement here. Dalic took Croatia to the 2018 World Cup final — a run that stunned world football, beating Argentina and England along the way before losing to France. Four years later in Qatar, they finished third. Two consecutive podiums with a nation of under four million people. That's not a run of good fortune. That's sustained elite management.
But football doesn't do long goodbyes, and the 2026 tournament made clear the window has closed. Croatia without Luka Modrić at full power is a different team. The generation that carried that 2018 squad to the final is aging out, and the replacements haven't arrived in the same quality.
The federation sent him off warmly — "the victories, the achievements, the qualifying berths, the medals, the unity" — which is federation-speak for: we know what we had, and we know it's over.
What comes next for Croatia
Whoever steps in faces a genuine rebuild. The squad depth that made Croatia competitive deep into tournaments isn't there right now, and anyone betting on Croatia to contend at Euro 2028 is getting well ahead of what the pipeline currently supports.
Dalic departs with his reputation intact — more than intact, actually. A World Cup final and a third-place finish are career-defining results for any coach. The exit just came one tournament too late to end cleanly.
Croatia are now looking for their first new head coach since October 2017. That search starts from a lower base than most fans will want to admit.
