Wolfsburg Pull the Trigger Again: Coach and Sporting Director Out After Fan Fury

Things have gone from bad to worse at Wolfsburg. The struggling Bundesliga club has shown both their coach and sporting director the exit door after a winless run that's now stretched to eight games. That's right – eight games without a victory.

Coach Daniel Bauer got his marching orders on Sunday morning. Just hours earlier, managing director for sport Peter Christiansen was also dismissed. The double sacking came after Wolfsburg suffered a painful 2-1 home defeat to Hamburger SV on Saturday night.

The loss leaves the Volkswagen-backed club stuck firmly in the relegation zone with just nine rounds left to play. For anyone backing Wolfsburg to stay up this season, things are looking seriously dicey right now. The odds on them dropping down a division must be shortening by the week.

Fans Make Their Anger Clear

The atmosphere at the Volkswagen Arena turned toxic after the Hamburg defeat. Masked Wolfsburg supporters threw flares onto the pitch, sending black smoke billowing across the stadium. Players from both sides got involved in an ugly on-field scuffle that captured just how tense things have become.

Before the match, fans had displayed a banner giving the team one last chance and pledging their support. After the final whistle? A new banner appeared saying "Chance wasted, support withdrawn." That's about as blunt as it gets.

Hundreds of Wolfsburg fans had even shown up at training the day before, desperately trying to motivate the players. It didn't work.

Second Coaching Change This Season

Here's the thing – Bauer wasn't even supposed to be the main man. He's actually the Under-19 coach who stepped up on an interim basis back in November when Paul Simonis was fired after a terrible start to the season.

Sporting director Pirmin Schwegler admitted they'd hoped to turn things around with Bauer in charge. "Analyzing the overall situation, we came to the conclusion that we need to give the team a new impetus to secure our place in the league," he said.

Christiansen, who'd been managing director for sport since 2024, also paid the price. While he'd done well with the women's team restructuring, the men's results simply weren't good enough.

Reports suggest Dieter Hecking is the frontrunner to take over and try to keep Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga. The club says they'll announce a new head coach "in the near future." With relegation looming and time running out, they'd better move fast.
