Chris Wilder called Wrexham out on Monday for "blanket bombing" the transfer market. By Tuesday, they'd taken one of his best players. That's one way to respond.
Callum O'Hare, 28, has signed a three-year deal at the Racecourse Ground for an undisclosed fee, becoming Wrexham's seventh signing of the summer. Wilder had made clear he wanted the winger to stay at Bramall Lane. Phil Parkinson clearly had other ideas.
O'Hare's arrival was paired with another addition: centre-back Joe Worrall from relegated Burnley, on a two-year deal. Two signings, one day, and a pointed message sent back up the M1.
Plugging a hole that badly needed plugging
Worrall might actually be the more pressing business. Wrexham have lost five centre-backs this window — five — and Worrall is the first recognised replacement through the door. That's an alarming level of defensive churn for a club sitting 20th in the Championship after four games, having already shipped goals against Cardiff, Watford, and Birmingham. Their defensive line is still very much a work in progress, and that makes their short-priced promotion odds look optimistic at best.
Parkinson pointed to Worrall's promotion pedigree as the selling point. "He's been part of promotions out of this division," the manager noted — relevant experience for a club that has made no secret of its Premier League ambitions. Worrall himself didn't shy away from the expectation either: "I'm here to win football matches and achieve something special."
O'Hare's motivations are equally transparent. "I want to help the Club go in the right direction and hopefully get what everyone wants — promotion to the Premier League." When your Hollywood ownership has made the end goal that public, subtlety goes out the window.
A tough week to bed in
Neither signing has much time to settle. Wrexham travel to Millwall on Wednesday before the short trip to Swansea on Saturday — two tests that will tell you plenty about where this team actually is right now, new signings or not. They're already seven points off league leaders Charlton Athletic, and the early-season wobble is starting to look like more than just a blip.
Wilder's frustration is understandable. Losing O'Hare to a direct promotion rival, hours after publicly fighting to keep him, stings. But Wrexham's chequebook is doing the talking this window, and right now no one in the Championship is better positioned to ignore the complaints of rival managers.
