Deadline Day is here, and the clock is running down on the 2026 summer transfer window. If you've been following any of the summer's lingering sagas, today is when they either die or explode — sometimes both.
The Premier League, as ever, is where most of the action sits. The English top flight's window closes at 11 p.m. UK (6 p.m. ET / 3 p.m. PT) on Tuesday, September 1 — four hours later than last summer's cutoff, which gives clubs a little more rope to hang themselves with late in the day.
The deal sheet rule is worth understanding
There's a wrinkle to the Premier League deadline that catches people out every year. Clubs can submit a deal sheet before the 11 p.m. cutoff, which grants a two-hour extension to finalize the paperwork. That pushes the effective deadline to 1 a.m. UK (8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT). But if the deal isn't fully registered by that point, it doesn't go through — no exceptions.
The EFL mirrors the Premier League deadline at 11 p.m. UK. Meanwhile, the Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1 close earlier — 8 p.m. UK (3 p.m. ET / 12 p.m. PT) — so continental clubs have less room to maneuver late in the day. That asymmetry occasionally matters when a player is weighing options between England and Europe.
La Liga, doing what La Liga does, operates on its own schedule: 11:59 p.m. UK (6:59 p.m. ET / 3:59 p.m. PT). That extra hour has occasionally been the difference between a deal happening and collapsing entirely. Julián Alvarez has reportedly been pushing for a move all summer, though Barcelona appear to have shifted their focus toward Gabriel Jesus instead. Whether that changes before midnight in Spain is anyone's guess.
Beyond Europe: SPL and MLS deadlines
The Saudi Pro League isn't closing shop on September 1. Their window runs until October 12, which means European clubs moving players on after their own deadlines still have an outlet — and players who find themselves frozen out could yet engineer an exit east.
MLS wraps its secondary window on Wednesday, September 2. The league has already had a productive summer, landing Robert Lewandowski, Antoine Griezmann and Casemiro, so expectations for a dramatic late influx are low. The real action is elsewhere.
