Gabriel Muresan, the Romanian midfielder who captained CFR Cluj through some of the most significant nights in the club's history, has died at 44 after drowning in a lake near his home.
Firefighters pulled him from the water midweek and he was rushed to hospital, but medics were unable to revive him. Early reports point to possible thermal shock upon entering the water as the cause.
A career worth remembering properly
Muresan made over 130 appearances for CFR Cluj, winning three Liga I titles and three Romanian Cups. That's not a decorated career by coincidence — Cluj during that period were the dominant force in Romanian football, and Muresan was at the centre of it as captain.
He lined up in UEFA Champions League group-stage matches against Manchester United, Chelsea, and AS Roma. For a player from Romanian football, that's as big a stage as it gets. He held his own on it.
After hanging up his boots, Muresan didn't drift into obscurity. He became mayor of Apold, a small Transylvanian town, and held the role since 2020. His town hall announced his death with a statement that said everything about what he'd become beyond football: "a devoted servant of our community."
Tributes from the federation
The Romanian Football Federation issued condolences, calling on supporters and the wider game to remember him. "May God rest him" — simple, direct, and probably the most human thing a federation has put out all year.
Muresan is survived by a community he served long after the final whistle, and a generation of Cluj supporters who watched him lead their club onto Europe's biggest stages.
