Arbeloa Says He's Being Put in an 'Unfair Position' Over Carvajal — But the Numbers Don't Help Him

Álvaro Arbeloa spent nearly two minutes in his pre-match press conference pushing back against what he called an attempt to paint him as the villain in Dani Carvajal's story. Whether he convinced anyone is another matter.

"You are trying to put me in an unfair position," Arbeloa told reporters ahead of Friday's La Liga match against Real Betis. "To think I make lineups for personal reasons — I find it hard to believe that any coach in the world would not pick a team based on football reasons."

The problem is that Carvajal, Real Madrid's captain and a player Arbeloa insists he treats with "affection, respect, and admiration," has appeared in just 22% of available minutes this season. That is the number sitting in the room no matter how warmly the coach speaks about him in press conferences.

Trent's form, Carvajal's wait

The arithmetic is straightforward: Trent Alexander-Arnold has been excellent, and Carvajal has been paying for it. Arbeloa was direct on that front. "Trent is earning his place. His performances are beyond doubt." He doesn't give away minutes, he said — not to anyone.

That framing works as long as results hold. If Madrid drop points to Betis or stumble in the run-in, the rotation policy and the Carvajal situation will be revisited loudly. Madrid's title chances are already out of their own hands — they need to win all six remaining matches and rely on Barcelona dropping points. That context makes every team selection feel higher-stakes than normal, and Arbeloa knows it.

"Every match feels like life or death for me," he said. He'd better mean it. The title race odds for Madrid are long enough already without lineup controversies muddying the dressing room.

Carvajal's future and Mbappé's social media activity

On whether Carvajal stays beyond this season, Arbeloa kept it brief: "Anything good for Carvajal and Real Madrid is good for me." Diplomatic, non-committal, and essentially no answer at all.

He was similarly unbothered by Kylian Mbappé liking a social media post about a potential José Mourinho return to management. "He can like Mourinho, Julia Roberts, or whoever he wants," Arbeloa said. Fair enough — though it's the kind of distraction a team chasing a title doesn't need.

  • Carvajal has played just 22% of available minutes this season
  • Arbeloa insists selection decisions are purely based on football merit
  • Trent Alexander-Arnold is keeping the captain out of the starting XI
  • Madrid must win all six remaining games to keep any title hope alive
  • Arbeloa declined to clarify Carvajal's future at the club

"We are only focused on this match against Betis," Arbeloa said to close. With the title race in Barcelona's hands and a captain watching from the bench, focused is probably the best they can be.
