"I'm just going to sit on the fence and enjoy the game." That's David Beckham's take on a World Cup final between Spain and Argentina — and New York's Fanatics Fest crowd made sure he heard exactly what they thought of it.
The boos came fast. Beckham and Kaka, sitting side by side, laughed them off. "I haven't been booed for a while," Beckham quipped. "I wasn't expecting it here."
Why the fence-sitting actually makes sense
It's easy to mock the diplomatic non-answer, but Beckham's position is genuinely awkward. He played for Real Madrid. He co-owns Inter Miami, where Lionel Messi is the main attraction. He's close personal friends with the Argentine captain. And his country — England — just got knocked out in the semifinals by Argentina, a defeat he watched from the stands before being consoled by his son Cruz.
Pick Spain and you're throwing shade at your most famous employee. Pick Argentina and you're celebrating the team that just ended England's World Cup. There was no clean answer in that room.
He tried his best to thread the needle — praising Spain's tournament as "exceptional" and calling Messi "an exceptional player, but an exceptional person with the right values." The crowd wasn't buying it. Hence the boos.
What's actually at stake in the final
The match itself is a genuinely fascinating contest. Argentina are defending champions, with Messi looking for a second consecutive World Cup title in what is almost certainly his last tournament at this level. Spain, meanwhile, haven't lifted the trophy since 2010 — fifteen years of near-misses and rebuilds culminating in this.
From a betting standpoint, Argentina's experience of winning it once is a factor, but Spain's cohesion across this tournament has been hard to ignore. Those odds deserve scrutiny before the final whistle blows.
As for Beckham — he's already got his answer ready if anyone asks again: "I'm going around the houses."
