Cape Verde Captain Ryan Mendes Accused of Rape Ahead of Argentina World Cup Clash.

Ryan Mendes, the captain of Cape Verde's 2026 World Cup squad, has been accused of rape by a Brazilian woman who worked as a translator for the team during a FIFA Series trip to New Zealand in March.

According to Brazil's Globo, the woman told New Zealand police that after Cape Verde's match against Chile, she was invited to a gathering in one of the team's hotel rooms. When she realised no translation was needed and it was purely social, she returned to her own room. Shortly after, she says Mendes knocked on her door, forced his way in, throttled, punched, and bit her before raping her. She submitted photos to police documenting injuries to her mouth, neck, leg, and side.

FIFA paying attention, Mendes yet to speak

FIFA confirmed it is in contact with New Zealand authorities to monitor developments, noting that misconduct allegations are treated seriously. Mendes has made no public statement.

The timing couldn't be more loaded. Cape Verde face reigning world champions Argentina on July 3 — a knockout-stage clash that would have been the headline story of the week in its own right. Mendes captained the side to the Round of 32, a genuine achievement for a nation of this size on the world's biggest stage.

Whether he takes the field against Argentina now sits in deeply uncertain territory. Cape Verde haven't indicated any intention to drop him, but the legal process in New Zealand and the pressure on FIFA to act could change that quickly. Any movement on his availability will shift the picture considerably — Cape Verde without their captain and talisman against Messi's Argentina is a very different proposition to the one the odds currently reflect.

The accuser's account is detailed, documented, and has been formally submitted to police. That's where the matter stands.
