Chelsea Hijack Inter Milan's Deal to Land Marco Palestra as Xabi Alonso Era Begins

Chelsea didn't wait long to show how the Xabi Alonso era would operate. The Blues have signed Marco Palestra from Atalanta for approximately £47 million including add-ons — jumping the queue ahead of Inter Milan, who had been in advanced talks with the Serie A club before Chelsea tabled a bigger number and ended the conversation.

Palestra, 21, arrives on a seven-year deal. That contract length alone tells you how Chelsea view him — not a short-term fix, but a cornerstone of whatever Alonso is building at Stamford Bridge.

How Chelsea cut in front of Inter

Inter's negotiations with Atalanta were already underway when Chelsea made their move. They came in higher, agreed personal terms quickly, and the deal was done. Clean, calculated, and clinical — which is either a sign of a club that knows what it wants, or one that's willing to overpay to announce itself under a new manager. The full fee structure will determine which.

Palestra spent last season on loan at Cagliari, where Chelsea's scouts kept a close eye on him. At 21, he's versatile across the backline, recently capped for Italy, and carrying the kind of profile that suits a high-possession, positionally structured system — exactly what Alonso built at Leverkusen. His Chelsea deal expiring in 2032 also means his resale value is protected if the project goes sideways.

The player himself was effusive but genuine. "We have so many talented players here, a very strong squad and manager in Xabi," he told the club. "He has spoken to me about how he wants us to play, which is exciting." Whether that excitement holds through a full Premier League season is a different matter — but the intent is clear on both sides.

An Italy international with a debut worth knowing

Palestra made his senior Italy debut less than four months ago under Gennaro Gattuso, featuring in a 2-0 win over Northern Ireland in the World Cup playoff semi-final. He then played 74 minutes in the final as Italy were beaten by Bosnia and Herzegovina on penalties — a rough introduction to international football, but one that didn't dent his market value.

Leaving Atalanta after eleven years in their system clearly hit differently. On Instagram he wrote: "I came to Bergamo as a child. Atalanta was much more than a club: it's where I grew up as a football player and as a person." That kind of emotional departure usually signals someone who earned their move rather than forced it.

For Chelsea's defensive odds heading into the new season, a young Italy international signed to a long-term deal provides genuine depth at minimum — and potentially a starter if Alonso trusts him quickly. Palestra is the first signing of the new regime. He won't be the last.
