Richarlison is out of Tottenham's registered Premier League squad — and he's still at the club with nowhere to go. Roberto De Zerbi has left the Brazilian out of Spurs' 25-man roster after the numbers didn't add up: one too many non-homegrown players, and Richarlison was the one who got cut.
That decision didn't come out of nowhere. De Zerbi had already told the striker he had no future at the club before the Premier League transfer deadline passed, and Richarlison had made his own desire to leave clear throughout the summer. The problem was that a move never materialised. A return to Everton collapsed — Richarlison reportedly grew frustrated with how Spurs handled those negotiations — and now he's stuck in a squad that officially has no room for him.
What this means for Spurs and the striker
He finished last season as Tottenham's top scorer. That detail matters when you're trying to understand why this situation is as awkward as it is. De Zerbi is essentially telling his leading goalscorer from the previous campaign: you're not in my plans, go find a club, but good luck because you've got until someone else's transfer window closes.
Trabzonspor have been linked with a move before Turkey's deadline shuts. That would represent a significant step down from the Premier League for a 29-year-old who, by most metrics, should still be operating at a higher level. His contract runs out in 10 months, with Tottenham holding a one-year extension option — which gives them just enough leverage to make this drag out.
Meanwhile, De Zerbi's squad includes both Xavi Simons and Wilson Odobert despite both recovering from ACL injuries. Odobert is expected back before the end of the year; Xavi is targeting a faster return than the injury typically allows. Dejan Kulusevski also makes the cut after returning to full training 477 days after his own serious knee problem. Jacob Knightbridge, 22, claims the final homegrown spot after Dane Scarlett moved permanently to Leyton Orient.
