Marc Overmars is resigning as Royal Antwerp's sports director, effective immediately. The 51-year-old cited accumulating fatigue, chronic stress, and the direct warnings of his medical team in a letter published to supporters on Wednesday. He joined the Belgian club in 2022, just months before suffering a mild stroke that December. He never fully stepped back after that. Now he has no choice.
A career that never stopped accelerating
Overmars spent nearly a decade as director of football at Ajax — one of the most demanding jobs in Dutch football — before his tenure there ended abruptly in 2022 when he was found to have sent inappropriate messages to multiple female colleagues. He apologized and left. Within months, Antwerp had hired him.
There was no real rest between those roles. No recovery window. Just a new club, a new league, and the same relentless grind — until his body started sending signals he couldn't ignore.
"All the fatigue that has built up over the years and the enormous amount of stress," he wrote. "I can no longer cope with this hectic, stressful professional life."
What it means for Antwerp
Antwerp are a club still building their identity as a genuine force in the Belgian Pro League. Overmars was central to that project — his recruitment network and Ajax-era contacts gave them credibility in the transfer market that Belgian clubs rarely enjoy. Replacing that infrastructure quietly, mid-cycle, is not a straightforward task.
Any squad-building plans for the coming window will now be delayed or delegated. In a league where margins are tight and recruitment timing matters, that's a real operational problem — not just a PR moment.
As for Overmars, he's been clear: this isn't a sabbatical with a return date pencilled in. "I have to make a drastic decision and completely stop my professional activities for the time being." His doctors have already told him what happens if he doesn't.
