Marc Dos Santos didn't wait for Son Heung-min to wear down. He went to him first.
The LAFC head coach confirmed Wednesday that the club will actively manage Son's minutes through a punishing August stretch that packs eight matches into a single month — MLS regular season games stacked on top of Leagues Cup fixtures. That's not a light touch rotation. That's a full workload strategy, applied to the player the whole squad runs through.
"The players always tell you that they are good, they are ready and they could play every game," Dos Santos said. "But the graphic you see in a condensed period... you see players peaking and then after an X amount of always playing, you see their graphic coming down."
The timing matters
Son only just broke his MLS goal drought last Friday, scoring against LA Galaxy after going blank in 13 league matches. His two previous goals this season came in the Concacaf Champions Cup — a different competition, a different context. The Galaxy goal felt like a release valve, and now LAFC have to be careful they don't push him straight back into the grind before that momentum builds.
He turns 34 this month. Managing his load isn't pessimism — it's math.
Against Wednesday's opponents Real Salt Lake, Son has form worth watching. He hit his first MLS hat trick against them on September 17 last year, then added a goal and two assists four days later. If Dos Santos uses this match to blood that plan — pulling him at a pre-set minute regardless of the score — it'll be telling. LAFC's anytime scorer markets on Son will fluctuate accordingly through this run.
Eight games in a month changes everything
For a squad competing on two fronts, depth becomes everything in August. LAFC have the personnel to rotate, but Son isn't a luxury piece they can simply rest without feeling the drop. The question isn't whether to manage him — Dos Santos has already answered that. The question is whether the players stepping in when Son comes off can hold what he builds.
"Sonny understands, of course," the coach said. That's the key line. A 34-year-old who knows his body, trusts the process, and doesn't push back — that's the version of this situation that ends well for LAFC.
