Southampton Thrown Out of the Playoffs for Spying on Middlesbrough

Southampton have been expelled from the Championship playoffs after admitting they filmed Middlesbrough's training sessions without authorisation. They won the semi-final 2-1 on aggregate. None of that matters now.

The EFL's Independent Disciplinary Commission ruled on Tuesday that Southampton's actions constituted "multiple breaches of EFL regulations," and the punishment is about as severe as it gets short of a points deduction — which they also received. Four points docked for next season, and gone from the playoff picture entirely.

Middlesbrough are back in the final

Middlesbrough, who had called loudly for Southampton's expulsion after discovering a training session ahead of the first leg had been filmed, will now face Hull City in the final on Saturday, May 23. A match they lost on the pitch, they've won off it.

"We believe this sends out a clear message for the future of our game regarding sporting integrity and conduct," Middlesbrough said. That's diplomatically put. The blunter version: Southampton cheated, got caught, and have paid the full price.

The prize on the table is a Premier League spot worth an estimated £200 million over three seasons. That context makes what Southampton did even harder to excuse — and makes their punishment feel proportionate rather than harsh. This wasn't a technical paperwork violation.

An appeal is still possible

Southampton can appeal, and the EFL confirmed parties are working to resolve any challenge by Wednesday. If successful, the Saturday final could change again. Hull and Middlesbrough's preparations are now being made on uncertain ground.

From a betting standpoint, Middlesbrough's odds coming into this final will look nothing like a typical playoff finalist's — they haven't had a week's preparation, they've had a legal battle. How that affects their legs on Saturday is a genuine unknown.

  • Southampton admitted to multiple EFL regulation breaches
  • The club has been expelled from the 2026 playoffs entirely
  • Four points deducted from next season's Championship tally
  • Middlesbrough reinstated and will face Hull City in the final
  • Kickoff time for Saturday's final is yet to be confirmed

The EFL's statement makes clear the final "remains scheduled for Saturday 23 May" — but added the caveat that a successful appeal "could result in a further change." Southampton's week isn't over yet.
