Ferran Torres scored the extra-time goal that beat Argentina and won Spain the World Cup. Twenty-four hours later, everyone's talking about his hat.
During Monday's celebratory bus parade through Madrid, the Barcelona forward was photographed wearing a red cap reading "Make Spain Great Again" — a direct riff on Donald Trump's MAGA branding. He posted the photos himself on Instagram. They went viral immediately. And he has said absolutely nothing about why.
What was he actually saying?
That's the question nobody can answer, including Torres. The silence is doing a lot of work here.
The Trump White House didn't wait for clarification. They shared Fox News footage of Torres wearing the cap with the caption: "Everyone wants in on the movement." Whether that's an accurate read or a spectacular misread depends entirely on what Torres actually meant — and right now, only he knows.
The counter-argument has real legs too. Trump predicted an Argentina win before the final, has spent years taking shots at Spain's government, and became an unlikely meme during the trophy presentation when he lingered on the pitch long enough to make things awkward. Wearing his hat in that context could just as easily be a pointed joke as an endorsement.
The ambiguity is the story. A clear tribute or a clear mockery would've generated a news cycle. This generates a political Rorschach test — and Torres is apparently content to let it run.
Spain's golden moment, muddied
The timing is a shame, in a narrow sense. Spain just won their first World Cup since 2010. The squad blended a new generation of talent with the kind of tournament temperament that's been missing for over a decade. Torres's winner against Argentina — in extra time, against Messi's side — was the defining moment of the tournament.
Now the headline from the parade isn't the trophy. It's a hat.
HuffPost has contacted the Royal Spanish Football Federation and Torres's representatives. No response yet. Until Torres actually speaks, everyone's just projecting onto a red cap.
