Iranian fans who followed every official step to attend the 2026 World Cup are now being told they won't get in. FIFA has withdrawn Iran's ticket allocation just days before the tournament begins, the country's football federation (FFIRI) confirmed on Tuesday — and nobody from FIFA has bothered to explain why.
"Many Iranian football fans, relying on the officially announced process, had already made the necessary plans to attend the matches," the FFIRI said in a statement. Travel booked. Arrangements made. Then the rug pulled.
This didn't come out of nowhere
The ticketing row is the latest chapter in a chaotic build-up that has had almost nothing to do with football. It started in March when Donald Trump publicly questioned whether Iran should even be allowed to participate, writing that the team was "welcome" but he didn't think it "appropriate" they attend — for "their own life and safety." FIFA declined to move Iran's matches out of the United States.
Then came the visa crisis. Iran's players only received US entry clearance ten days before their first match, gutting their preparation window. Worse, 15 of the 70-person delegation that arrived in Tijuana never received visas at all — including, per the FFIRI, "key managerial and administrative members." Iran's ambassador Ali Pasandideh confirmed those numbers. FIFA did not respond to requests for comment on that either.
Now add a blanket ticket withdrawal to the pile. The pattern is hard to ignore: Iranian supporters trying to engage with this tournament through legitimate channels keep finding the door shut at the last moment.
What it means beyond the headlines
For anyone tracking Iran's World Cup odds or their group-stage prospects, the football itself is almost secondary at this point. A team that arrived short-staffed, under-prepared, and now playing in stadiums largely emptied of their own supporters is not a team operating under normal conditions. Whatever handicap the bookmakers have assigned them, factor in the circus surrounding their camp before a ball has been kicked.
Neither FIFA nor tournament organisers have offered any detailed explanation for pulling the ticket allocation. That silence is its own kind of answer.
