"I think about her all the time because now I have everything I ever dreamed of, and I can't share it with her." That's Yan Diomande on his younger sister, who died just days before he signed his first professional contract in Europe. He signed anyway. He keeps scoring. He points to the sky every time.
And now, just 19 years old, he's reportedly days away from joining Real Madrid.
The timeline is almost absurd. January 2025: he makes his LaLiga debut for Leganés on a free transfer after being discovered at DME Academy in Daytona Beach, Florida. Summer 2025: RB Leipzig pay €20 million for him. Weeks later: Real Madrid come calling. That's less than 12 months from unknown to one of the most coveted teenagers in European football.
Built in places most footballers never see
Diomande grew up in Sicogi, a neighbourhood in Abidjan where he played barefoot on dry dirt fields. No cleats — those cost money his family didn't have. At 10, he left home alone to join a distant academy because staying meant giving up on the only exit he could see. An academy director named Bamba took him in, gave him a roof and bought him his first pair of proper boots.
His next move was harder still. Still a teenager, unable to speak English, he flew alone to Florida — his family could only afford one ticket. He learned English from a phone app. He trained on American football fields. He won MVP in the USPL semi-professional league and caught the eye of MLS clubs and English scouts. Every night, he missed his family.
"Now I feel like I could live alone forever," he said of that period. It sounds like peace. It was probably survival dressed up as acceptance.
What he's actually done with the ball
At RB Leipzig — a club that has turned identifying young talent into something close to a science — Diomande contributed to 23 goals across 36 appearances last season. Twelve goals, nine assists in Bundesliga play alone. Head coach Ole Werner put it simply: "He can beat defenders without dribbling, purely through his power."
That's a specific kind of problem for defenses. Raw pace is manageable. Power combined with technical ability at 19, with the mentality this kid has built through genuine adversity, is a different proposition entirely.
His professional debut came against Real Madrid. He barely slept the night before. He swapped shirts with Mbappé at the final whistle. His first professional goal, against Espanyol, ended with him in tears on the pitch, pointing to the sky.
- Signed by Leganés on a free transfer, January 2025
- Sold to RB Leipzig for €20 million shortly after
- 23 goal contributions in 36 appearances at Leipzig last season
- Three goals in 14 senior appearances for Ivory Coast
- 19 years old
For Real Madrid's recruitment team, the numbers and the age are obviously the draw. For anyone watching him play, there's something harder to quantify — a player who has spent his entire life treating football as the only serious option, because for a long time it genuinely was.
Franck Kessié once said Ivory Coast "can sleep peacefully" with talents like Diomande coming through. Whether Real Madrid's rivals can sleep peacefully is a different question entirely.
