From Title Contenders to the Championship: The Points Deduction That Could End Man City.

Manchester City need 74 points stripped from them to be relegated in every single one of Opta's 100,000 simulated seasons. That number tells you everything about the scale of punishment it would take — and how far away from reality it currently sits.

City have been found guilty of more than 100 regulatory breaches spanning nine seasons, with an independent commission ruling that a systematic "Disguised Funding Scheme" distorted the competition's finances across nearly a decade. The club are appealing. But the punishment phase is coming, and Opta's supercomputer has mapped out exactly what different deductions would mean for City's season.

Title race, European places, survival — the numbers at each threshold

On title chances: a five-point deduction nearly halves City's odds. Anything beyond 10 points and their realistic prospects of winning the league effectively evaporate. A 25-point penalty puts the title out of reach entirely — and given that Everton received a 10-point deduction for a single-season breach, and Nottingham Forest six points for a similar offence, the expectation of a steeper sanction for 115 charges across nine years isn't conspiracy thinking. It's arithmetic.

Champions League qualification is more resilient. Even under a 20-point deduction, City would still have roughly a 28% chance of finishing in the top four — better odds than Chelsea currently have with no deduction at all. That window slams shut somewhere around 38 points, where top-four probability falls below 1%.

Then there's relegation. Even a 20-point deduction — which would shatter every historical precedent — still only relegates City in fewer than 5% of simulations. Aston Villa currently have a 7.9% chance of going down with their full points intact, to put that in context. The balance doesn't actually tip until 40 points are removed, and a guaranteed finish of 18th or below doesn't arrive until 60 points are gone.

What this means for the rest of the table

For Arsenal, defending champions and current title favourites, any meaningful sanction improves their position materially. Their odds of retaining the title only strengthen as City's points shrink. The same logic applies to Liverpool, Chelsea, and anyone else scrapping for European spots — City's misfortune at a tribunal is a direct competitive benefit for everyone beneath them in the table.

The Premier League cannot directly relegate City — they can only expel the club from their own competition. Relegation via a points deduction large enough to guarantee a bottom-three finish is the realistic worst-case route. Based on Opta's modelling, that means a punishment without any precedent in English football history.

Whether the independent panel has the appetite for a 74-point deduction is an entirely different question. The simulations show it's mathematically possible. Politically and legally, it would be the most consequential sporting punishment England has ever handed down.
